J and J Performing Arts’ Competitive Team just got back from San Mateo, California after competing at Starbound, a nationally recognized dance competition.
The J and J team has 18 members, ages 6 to 18 years old and over the course of three days the dancers competed 12 different routines in hip-hop, lyrical, jazz, musical theatre, and contemporary.
Collectively the team brought home 7 High Golds and 2 Golds as well as a 5th overall placement.
Soloists, Ashlyn Clark, Mariah Beckman, received High Golds and Courtney Beckman, Hailey Gregor, and Sam Medvin received Golds for their performances.
Hailey Gregors solo took home an audience choice award and Courtney Beckman received a judges award for Beautiful Stage Presence.
“Dance competitions are as fierce as you think they are,” explains the team’s Artistic Director Jessica Newton-Wade. “Dancers within a 200 mile radius came out to compete. Some of the teams attend performing arts schools where they can practice their art for many hours a day.”
According to Newton-Wade the J and J Competitive Team has put in at least three hours a week rehearsing and 5+ hours of dance classes since August. The group’s next competition, Legacy Dance Championships, is April 8th – 10th in Sacramento.
Closer to home the J and JÂ team will be performing at the Reno Big Horns Game April 1st. The whole night is dedicated to Susanville and JandJ Performing Arts will be bringing some halftime heat to the court. For ticket information follow this link to the Reno Bighorns online.
