A Janesville woman sustained fatal injuries Tuesday afternoon as the result of a head-on collision that occurred on Highway 395 near Johnstonville.
According to details released Wednesday by the Susanville office of the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened at around 12:30 as 82-year old Janesville resident Evangeline Deveir was driving a 2012 Nissan northbound on US-395, just south of the junction of Highway 36.
At the same time Sparks, Nevada resident Eugene Keen was driving a 2018 Dodge southbound on the highway towing a Wildcat RV at between 45 and 50mph.
“For unknown reasons,” explains the report, “Devier turned her Nissan to the left over double yellow lines into the southbound traffic lane directly in the path of the Dodge.”
According to the report Keen applied his brakes and turned to the right but could not avoid a collision.
First the front of the Nissan collided with the front of the Dodge then both vehicles separated and entered a counter-clockwise rotation, during which their left sides collided again.
Keen’s vehicle came to rest facing in a northwesterly direction on its wheels, partially on the southbound shoulder and partially in the southbound traffic lane.
The Nissan traveled in a southeasterly direction before coming to rest, on its wheels, partially on the northbound shoulder and partially in the northbound traffic lane.
Devier and a passenger from Keen’s vehicle were initially transported by ground ambulance to Banner Lassen Medical Center for treatment. Because of the severity of Devier’s injuries, she was flown from BLMC to Renown Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at around 2:30p.m.
The collision investigation is on-going and anyone who witnessed the accident, or has information pertinent to the investigation, is encouraged to contact the California Highway Patrol at 530-252-1800.
