JH Heating Weather: NWS Urges Residents to Prepare for Hazardous Weather

The National Weather Service is warning Lassen County residents to prepare for a predicted round of abundant dry lightning, low humidity and gusty winds over the next three to four days.

According to the weather service low pressure off the California coast will move slowly inland today causing mid-level moisture and instability to increase throughout the afternoon with a few severe thunderstorms possible.

• Scattered thunderstorms are forecast over much of the region in the afternoon and evening hours today and tomorrow. The most concentrated coverage will be over areas north of I-80 up to the Oregon border – Susanville, Cedarville, Gerlach.

• Red Flag Warnings are effect for today – given the enhanced threat of numerous lightning strikes and potential for new wildfire starts. Severe storms are also possible today and tomorrow – with strong/erratic winds above 55 mph and hail to the size of quarters. Storms generally will move to the north at between 15-25 mph.

• Forecast confidence is medium to high – the main uncertainties are where storms will develop, which is normally a challenge to predict well in advance.

As of 11:00a.m. Thursday morning thunderstorms are developing over the Surprise Valley… eastern Lassen and northern Washoe counties. The storms are moving north at 20 to 30 mph. Thunderstorms will continue to develop today with a few severe storms possible this afternoon.

Gusty winds may generate areas of blowing dust with visibility less than 3 miles. A remote observation site in northeast Lassen County reported a wind gust to 47 mph already this morning.

During a thunderstorm… seek shelter inside a sturdy structure or vehicle. Motorists should reduce speed during thunderstorms and be prepared for erratic winds and areas of blowing dust.
