JH Heating Weather: Winter Weather Returns (but briefly!)

The National Weather Service has issued a Special Weather Statement

… A return to wintry weather today and tonight…

A vigorous cold front will move through the Sierra and western Nevada today. Behind this front… much colder air will settle over the region through Tuesday.

This afternoon, bands of snow showers are likely north of Interstate 80 and in the northern Sierra as the next upper disturbance approaches the region. The bands will spread south to around Highway 50 this evening with snow showers shifting south to Mono and Mineral counties late tonight.

While it is difficult to determine where the exact location of the heaviest snow showers will develop… snow amounts in the Tahoe basin of 1 to 3 inches are expected by late Monday evening.

For western Nevada… snow will have a difficult time accumulating through early Monday evening due to a relatively warm ground. However… overnight a slushy half inch or so of snow is possible on the valley floors as the ground cools.

Above 5000 feet… an inch or 2 of snow is possible in western Nevada.

By Tuesday morning accumulations of up to 2 inches are possible across parts of Mono County. Any snow that falls overnight tonight could bring slick road conditions with chain or snow tire requirements in the higher elevations.
