Job Description:

Under the general supervision of the Shelter Manager, the Overnight Shelter Advocate provides a variety of services to persons who have experienced domestic violence and/or sexual assault, to promote resident self-sufficiency and transition from Shelter to the community; to provide a variety of counseling, crisis intervention, and general support; to interview participants assessing needs, making referrals; and other work as assigned by administration

Reports to: Shelter Manager, Executive Director

Job Classification: Non-Exempt, Non-Supervisory

Essential Duties and Responsibilities May Include: (The following is generally representative of the duties and responsibilities of this job classification.  It is not a complete description of all possible job assignments, nor is it restrictive as to job assignments and responsibilities which may be required of an incumbent.) Perform intake interviews with Lassen Family Services, Inc. participants; facilitate obtaining and distributing clothing and personal items for participants; assist shelter residents with the development of plans promoting self-sufficiency and transition from shelter living; conduct individual and group counseling sessions with residents; ensure that residents comply with agency policies, maintain proper living conditions, and the sanitary/safety requirements of a group living environment; conduct orientation sessions for new shelter residents; work with the Shelter Manager in obtaining and maintaining a sufficient inventory of food and supplies for shelter operations; provide backup response through the crisis line; maintain records and document statistical data related to shelter services; communicate all shelter participant needs to the Shelter Manager for input and direction; maintain ongoing communication with other shelter staff and business office staff regarding shelter participants; attend workshops, training sessions, and in-service meetings.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Understand the needs of people who have experienced domestic violence and/or sexual abuse.
  • Work with and counsel participants from a variety of socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds and provide culturally respective services to meet the needs of everyone.
  • Provide crisis intervention counseling and support.
  • Gather and organize a variety of data and information.
  • Prepare and maintain clear, accurate, and concise records and reports.
  • Effectively represent Lassen Family Service, Inc. policies, programs, and services with shelter residents.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 Knowledge of:

  • Lassen Family Services, Inc. programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Service assessment methods and techniques.
  • Service and program requirements and need of persons experiencing sexual abuse and domestic violence.
  • Individual and group counseling methods and techniques.
  • Long-range planning and service development.

Training/Experience/Education: Any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be completion of Lassen Family Services, Inc. Crisis Intervention Peer Counseling training. Six months of previous experience in providing social and counseling services to participants, preferably working in direct experience with persons who have been victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault.

Typical Physical Requirements: (LFS will discuss and make reasonable accommodations for job candidates and incumbents with disabilities.) Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; stoop, kneel, and crouch to pick-up, clean and or move objects; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; lift and move objects weighing up to 40 lbs.; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; use of office equipment including telephone, computer, calculator, copier, fax, and time clock.

Typical Working Conditions: Work is normally performed in the shelter environment; counseling and crisis intervention may be provided in a variety of environments; frequent driving to different locations and sites throughout the service area; frequent contact and communication with other staff, the public, shelter residents, and representatives of other agencies; work hours will be variable and outside of the normal (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM) workday in order to meet the require applicants may be required to work swing shift or graveyard shift, i.e., 4:00 PM – 12:00AM and 12:00 AM – 8:00 AM.

Special Requirements:

  • Valid CA Driver’s License and acceptable DMV record.
  • Proof of current auto insurance and adequate coverage.
  • Acceptable State and FBI criminal background check.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, Crisis Intervention Peer Counseling training.
  • Ability to maintain continuing education requirements for CIPC training.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, CPR certification.
