Keith Farrel Tiner – August 26, 2024

Keith Farrel Tiner was born February 7, 1949 to Thomas (T.A.) and Jewell Tiner. Keith was the youngest of three boys; Thomas, Dwight and Keith. Keith was born in Susanville at the old Riverside Hospital and but for a short 10 year period, he lived here his entire life. Keith grew up on the Blickenstaff Ranch in Janesville where he learned to drive a tractor and farm equipment. But more importantly, he learned the value of hard work and the pride in never letting his disability stop him from anything. He attended Lake School, Lassen High School (proud member of the Class of 1967), Lassen Junior College and on to Chico State majoring in accounting where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree.

In June of 1972, Keith and Barbara Jeter were married and moved to San Francisco where he worked for the IRS eventually transferring to the Redding Office. He was inching his way back toward Susanville and home. In 1976, his only son William Tiner was born. In 1982, missing the country life, he quit his job and moved his family back home to Susanville where he’d open his own accounting practice. His business grew as he and Barbara worked together to build a successful business in a community he loved, near family and most importantly, his life-long friends. The business required long hours and dedication, which he thrived on but in 1994 after a heart condition scare, he decided to sell his business, keep a few clients to keep him busy and began his next career as the Financial Administrative Officer for the Shasta Green Sawmill in Burney, CA. In 2022, he retired from the mill, but not from doing taxes. He lived and breathed crunching numbers while priding himself on being professional, but in a caring manner, putting integrity, honesty and trust at the forefront. All the while, never losing his sense of humor with his unrelenting barrage of jibs and jabs to make someone smile. No one was immune from his constant teasing. He continued to prepare tax returns until he could no longer physically do them.

Keith was in his element hunting and fishing. Watching the sunrise from a goose blind and enjoying a quiet sunset sitting is his boat after a long day on the lake. The hunting trips with his son, his daughter-in-law, his grandson and granddaughter and his many friends were his prized memories. Barbara tagged along pretending she really enjoyed getting up before dawn and trudging through the dirt and the dust, driving back roads scouting for deer for hours or sitting in a field of sticker bushes waiting for the dove to fly, just to be a part of the life Keith loved.

Keith was a tireless volunteer. He joined the Honey Lake Chapter of Ducks Unlimited in 1983, served as Chairman for over 10 years and continued to support DU all his life even to the extent that Barbara joking said their home was decorated in “Early American Duck.” He didn’t stop with DU, he was a member of the Susanville Rotary Club (Treasurer for many years); the Honey Lake Pointing Dog Club (Treasurer); the Honey Lake Bass Club (Treasurer); Lassen County Chamber of Commerce and a 4-H Club leader. He attended dinners and auctions for every function that supported wildlife and wildlife habitat. He gave back by preparing non-profit tax returns for many of these organizations and never billed for his time.

Keith passed in the comfort of his home, alongside his wife and family on August 26, 2024. He is survived by his wife of 52 years Barbara Tiner, his son William Tiner (daughter-in-law Heather Tiner), Grandson Austin Tiner, Granddaughter Destiny Tiner and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Honey Lake Chapter of Ducks Unlimited, the Lassen High School Alumni Association or a charity of choice. As the fall hunting season begins, and the dove fly and the geese settle into a cluster of decoys, may a smile adorn your face knowing Keith has gone hunting…in a better place.

Graveside Service will be held September 7, 2024 at 11:00 am.  Gathering immediately following at Sentimental Journey Ranch, 465-320 Church Street, Janesville, California, 96114.
