Lassen County’s young agricultural enthusiasts have a new opportunity to hone their skills in the livestock world with the launch of the Lassen County 4-H Countywide Beef Project, led by a local champion, Maddi Johnson. The project, open to all 4-H and FFA members in Lassen County, aims to provide comprehensive education and hands-on experience in raising beef cattle.
“I am proud to announce that I will be the Lassen County 4-H Countywide Beef Leader this year!” Johnson stated. “This project is open to any 4-H or FFA member in any club or chapter within Lassen County.”
The program is designed to be inclusive and educational, covering all aspects of the beef project “from selection to harvest and everything in between.” Johnson brings a wealth of experience to the role, having spent 10 years in the stock show circuit, earning multiple showmanship and market championships at the county, state, and national levels.
Johnson, who raises her own homegrown cattle, is passionate about sharing her knowledge. “I have built my knowledge from the ground up,” she said, adding that her mission is to “teach you that champions are made and not bought!”
The project’s highlights will include showmanship practices, competitions and awards, and a curriculum focused on helping members learn about the beef industry, develop feed plans, and achieve their goals. The program also emphasizes the belief that “champions are made in the barn.”
Johnson, who is pursuing her education at Colorado State University through a fully online program, is able to dedicate her time to serving local youth. She confirmed that all project hours for participants will be verified and sent to their home clubs.
There will be a Lassen County 4H Beef Meeting this Sunday, September 7th at 2:00p.m. One parent may accompany project members. You must be enrolled and approved in ZSuite.
Only 4H members are allowed at 4H meetings, so if you are a FFA or independent, Johnson will offer private lessons and meetings at a different time.
For the meeting location or additional information, you can reach out to Johnson directly at 1.530.310.9526. Additional questions about the project can also be directed to the Lassen County 4-H Office at 1.530.251.8285.
