Lassen County Building Official Issues Reminder on RV Residency Restrictions

Lassen County Building Official Matt Schortz has issued a safety announcement and a firm reminder to residents regarding the legalities of using Recreational Vehicles as permanent residences within the county.

The announcement, released March 20th, highlights significant safety concerns associated with long-term RV living. According to national data from FEMA, carbon monoxide poisoning claims more than 400 lives in RVs annually, while RV fires account for approximately 15 deaths each year.

Schortz noted that these statistics have hit home recently, stating that Lassen County has seen at least one RV-related fire fatality this year.

Beyond the physical dangers, the Building Division is reminding the public of the legal restrictions governing where RVs can be used.

Pursuant to California Health and Safety Code section 18871 and Lassen County Code Title 18, it is unlawful to use an RV as a residence outside of a licensed park. Additionally, camping is prohibited in Residential Zoning Districts.

County officials emphasized that these regulations apply even on private property. The memo states that these measures are enforced as a “public nuisance” to maintain community standards and mitigate health risks.

Under Lassen County Code, the responsibility for these violations rests solely with the land owner.

“Please don’t put your tenants, your families, or your life in danger by living in an RV on private property,” Schortz urged in the release.

Residents with questions regarding RV safety or local zoning codes are encouraged to contact the Building Division of the Department of Planning and Building Services. For inspection requests or inquiries, the department can be reached at 1.530.257.5263.
