In the wake of the passing of Congressman Doug LaMalfa, the Lassen County Board of Supervisors and County Administrative Officer Maurice L. Anderson have issued a formal letter of condolence and tribute, recognizing the representative’s decades of influence on Northern California.
The statement, signed by CAO Anderson, paints a portrait of a steadfast advocate who deeply understood the nuances of rural governance and the agricultural way of life.
“Lassen County joins communities across Northern California in recognizing the decades of public service and leadership demonstrated by Congressman Doug LaMalfa,” the letter reads, noting his tenure spanning more than twenty years.
The County’s tribute specifically highlights LaMalfa’s legislative focus on issues vital to the region’s survival, including the protection of agricultural heritage and water resources. Notably, the officials commended LaMalfa for his specific involvement in the “livestock/wolf conflict issue,” a significant concern for local ranchers.
Beyond agriculture, the letter praised the Congressman’s efforts to secure federal support for rural infrastructure, specifically citing his advocacy for Payment In Lieu of Taxes funding. This federal program provides critical payments to local governments that help offset losses in property taxes due to non-taxable federal lands within their boundaries—a major budgetary factor for Lassen County.
“He understood the challenges facing rural counties like Lassen and worked to ensure our voices were represented at the federal level,” Anderson wrote.
The tribute also touched on LaMalfa’s personal background as a fourth-generation farmer, suggesting that his legislative priorities were rooted in a genuine appreciation for “hard work, self-reliance, and the importance of preserving the rural way of life.”
The letter concludes by extending thoughts to the Congressman’s family, staff, and constituents, stating that his commitment to the region has left a “lasting impact.”
