It’s our civic duty, yet the Lassen County District Attorney is having to remind local residents the importance of showing up for Jury Duty after several recent trials brought out historically low juror participation.
According to District Attorney Susan Rios, only 28 of 80 people summonsed last week showed up to serve on a jury and the last couple of trials have had all time low turnouts for jury service.
Did you know that failure to appear for a jury summons can subject you to monetary sanctions or the suspension of your driving privileges? This is what happens in other counties across the state when people fail to appear.
“It could happen soon in Lassen County too if the failure-to-appear trend continues,” warns Rios.
“We get it – we all live busy lives and do not want to be inconvenienced,” said Rios in a recent post on social media. “But all persons accused of a crime have a constitutional right to have a jury decide their case. When you serve on a jury, you have the opportunity to make important decisions that affect issues concerning your community.”
It’s simple – when you get the summons, please report for jury duty.
