forestserviceupdateOfficials on the Eagle Lake Ranger District of the Lassen National Forest say recreation facilities on the district are just about ready to open for the Memorial Day weekend.

Campgrounds along Highways 36 and 44 will have water, stocked restrooms, and campsites cleared of trees and debris from the February storm in time for the holiday weekend.

Crater Lake Campground will be a fee site. Goumaz, Roxie Peconom, Butte Creek, and Bogard campgrounds will be no fee sites this year. All are available on a first come, first serve basis.

The facilities at the Eagle Lake Recreation Area opened for visitors on May 16th. Campgrounds in this area have also been cleared of fallen trees and debris from the February wind event, and all facilities and amenities are up and running. The Marina Store is stocked and ready for service.

The Eagle Lake low water boat ramp will be open Memorial Day weekend for use by boaters. There will be forest personnel at the ramp on opening morning to help keep traffic flowing.

It is unlikely that boats larger than 12 feet or with deep hulls will be able to launch at the low water ramp this year. Boaters will need to determine for themselves, based on conditions, if water depths are adequate and whether their boats can be safely launched.

Boarding docks were placed in the water May 12th. Water depths measured at the bottom of the ramp and the end of the 100-foot dock were 24 inches and 36 inches, respectively.

Recreationists and boaters should be aware water levels at Eagle Lake have continued to decline and an increased number of shallow-water hazards should be expected, now and as the summer progresses. The Sheriff’s Office placed hazard buoys in the lake the first week of May, but boaters should remain watchful for additional hazards.

For information regarding Eagle Lake water levels, you may call the Eagle Lake Ranger District at (530) 257-4188. For more specific questions or concerns, you may contact KC Pasero, Acting Recreation Officer, at the same number.
