Join Lassen Land and Trails Trust on September 12th for an interpretive hike led by Liz Norton and Andrew Haut, both avid hikers and experienced trail leaders, to Eiler Lake in the 1,000 Lakes Wilderness. The outdoor getaway takes you to a mountainous part of the Lassen National Forest interspersed with pristine alpine lakes, meadows and volcanic and glacial rock formations—a moderate loop of about 7 miles.

Located in Shasta County at the southern end of the Cascade Range, this area is home to deer, bear, pine marten, pika, Clark’s Nutcracker and the occasional elk.  You’ll see the evidence of last year’s Eiler Fire along the way.

Participants are asked to meet at 8:00a.m. at the BLM Bizz Johnson Trailhead opposite the historic Susanville railroad depot on 601 Richmond Road, Susanville for carpooling.  The group will leave by 8:15.

For those from the west, meet at 9:00a.m. at the Bogard Rest Area off of Highway 44.

According to Discover Lassen Coordinator Suzanne McDonald the plan is to gather at the Tamarack Trailhead, near Old Station, at 10:15 to begin hike to Eiler Lake and loop around Barret Lake. McDonald reminds participants to dress appropriately, bring lunch and plenty of water, sun screen and insect repellent.

Hiking poles are also suggested as hikers will likely run into a lot of downed trees to climb over.

For the Adventuresome

The group outing will also feature an overnight option which includes camping at Eiler Lake Saturday night and hiking to Everett and Magee Lakes on Sunday, September 13th.

To Register: Email [email protected] or call (530) 257-3252. Space is limited.

“Please let us know,” said McDonald. “We don’t want to leave anyone behind!”

If you are a novice camper but the adventure intrigues you, McDonald can provide additional recommendation and suggestions for gear.
