Lassen National Forest officials are seeking highly motivated people to serve as emergency wildland firefighters for the 2017 fire season.
An introductory wildland fire readiness training designed to train entry level firefighters is scheduled to start July 17th.
Participants of the program will be highly competitive for wildland firefighter positions upon completion of the readiness training. These entry-level positions provide support to wildland fire operations over the course of the summer.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must be able to commit to 14 to 21 days on fire assignments, including out of the state.
- Must be able to pass Work Capacity Test; Walk 3 miles with 45 lbs. under 45 minutes.
- All training and Work Capacity Test are paid time.
- Starting pay is $16.40 an hour for training, firefighting pay is $18.32 an hour.
Individuals selected for the program will be introduced to and gain basic knowledge of the incident management system, firefighting techniques, suppression equipment, fire behavior and managing safe work practices. Field exercises and physical training will be part of this valuable hands-on training.
Training starts July 17th, at the Eagle Lake District Office, 477-050 Eagle Lake Road, Susanville, CA.
Firefighters engage in wildland fire suppression and emergency response operation activities. The work consists of hiking, carrying heavy equipment, operating fire apparatus, working near heavy machinery and using hand tools such as shovels, Pulaskis and chain saws, sometimes in highly stressful situations.
