The Lassen National Forest Fire Shop is offering a unique, hands-on look into the world of wildfire suppression with its “Wildland Fire Field Day” this Saturday, March 28th.
The event, titled “A Day in the Life of a Wildland Firefighter,” is designed to give community members an inside look at what it takes to protect our local forests and neighborhoods. From 9:30a.m. to 2:30p.m., attendees will have the chance to experience the broad range of tools, equipment and tactics used to combat wildfires in our region.
What to Expect
Participants will rotate through various stations around the Eagle Lake District Office, meeting local firefighters and learning about their day-to-day responsibilities. The event is particularly geared toward older teens and young adults (ages 15–18) who may be considering a rewarding career path in the outdoors, though there are no hard age requirements to attend.
Highlights of the day include:
- Live demonstrations of wildfire response equipment.
- In-depth discussions on fire tactics and safety.
- Information on exciting outdoor job opportunities within the Forest Service.
- A complimentary BBQ lunch provided for all participants.
Planning Your Visit
The Field Day will involve walking and hiking short distances between stations. While the activity is not considered vigorous, organizers recommend that attendees:
- Dress in layers and use sun protection.
- Wear field-going clothes and closed-toed shoes.
- Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated throughout the day.
The Eagle Lake District Office is located at 477-050 Eagle Lake Road. Registration: Pre-registration is required. Interested participants can click here to RSVP and view further details.
