LCOE Seeking Community Input on Potential Student Mental Health Screening Tool

The Lassen County Office of Education, alongside a collaborative team of local educators, is beginning early discussions regarding the potential future use of a universal mental health screener in county schools.

The goal of such a tool is to help schools better understand and support the social-emotional well-being of students. Much like the academic screeners already used to track reading or math progress, a mental health screener would help educators identify overall trends, recognize student strengths, and spot individuals who might benefit from additional support.

Proactive Support for Student Well-Being
If implemented, the screener could serve as an early-warning system, helping schools recognize when a student may need more immediate assistance. This ensures that students are connected with appropriate resources in a timely manner before challenges escalate.

The LCOE emphasizes that these discussions are in the very early stages. Many details—including how often a screener might be administered—have not yet been determined.

Community Values and Privacy First
The LCOE understands that in a rural community like ours, local values matter. No final decisions have been made, and the team has identified three core pillars that will remain central to any future considerations:

  • Student Privacy: Protecting sensitive information.
  • Family Choice: Ensuring parents remain the primary decision-makers.
  • Community Values: Respecting the unique perspective of Lassen County residents.

Your Voice Matters: Take the Survey
Because family perspectives are essential to this process, the LCOE is seeking community feedback early. Whether you are a parent, guardian, or concerned community member, your input will help guide the next steps and inform future decisions.

Get Involved: If you would like your voice heard, please click here and take a few minutes to complete the online survey.
