If there’s one thing Susanville residents know, it’s how to be supportive to their fellow community members. That’s what Lassen High student Kaleigh Smith found out when she organized and held a March of Dimes walkathon on March 24th.

The March of Dimes, originally founded by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1938, is a nonprofit organization that works to improve the health of mothers and babies.

Community members gathered at Lassen High School and from there marched two miles to Starbucks.

Student participant Nate Freeman said “I really enjoyed going on the walk and being with friends.”

Walkers told all who passed by about the March of Dimes mission, raising awareness of the charity.

After completing the walk, a silent auction was held, made possible by various Susanville businesses and community members who donated items.

In total $400 was raised for the March of Dimes.

Coordinator Kaleigh Smith told us, “The March of Dimes walk was a lot of fun and it went to a great cause. It was awesome to see people help out.”

Kaleigh thanked the community for coming out and supporting the cause.
