Luke Petersen, former Lassen High School wrestler has received a full tuition scholarship to the University of Nebraska.
Luke graduated from Lassen High School in 2011. After high school Luke chose to serve a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Cordoba, Argentina. After his return, he went on multiple recruiting trips, but Nebraska was the school he selected.
Marc Bauer Head Wrestling Coach at the University of Nebraska had this to say about Luke signing with Nebraska, “We are excited about Luke, his potential, and what he will bring to our program. We have been searching for a mobile and athletic heavyweight, and we’ve found him! Not only is Luke athletic and have great size to him, but we are impressed with his commitment and drive to excel at the collegiate level. Luke is a hardworking, dedicated young man with strong character. Those qualities will take him far at this level. We look forward to the impact Luke will have on our program over the next several years.”
During Luke’s senior year at Lassen High School, he was ranked 7th in state and placed in the top 16 in the nation in the heavyweight class.
When high school wrestling coach Dusty Vaughn was asked to describe Luke, he said “Luke Petersen I think is the total package. Some guys have talent but lack work ethic. Some guys have work ethic but lack talent. Some guys are disciplined, some are not. It’s very rare you have that kid that comes along that possess all of the qualities to have success in college athletics. Luke’s competitive nature, work ethic, leaderships ability, character and athletic ability will take Luke far in college wrestling as well as in life. I am extremely proud of this young man and excited to see him compete for 5 more year! Lopers, you got a good one!”
Luke credited his high school coaches for his success. “I would have never been able to get here without my head wrestling coach, Dusty Vaughn. Along with his assistant coach, Glen Schall. Also, Rodney Hartrum, Mo Suataz, Clay and Errin Montgomery.”
When signing his letter of intent, Luke credited his family, coaches and the Susanville community, “I could have never done this without my great coaches, supportive family and community. I’m so excited to experience this next phase in my life.”
