Landmark Bank Pillars are Toppled Friday Morning
April 14, 1971
THE FOUR LARGE CONCRETE PILLARS which stood in front of the old Bank of America building at Main and Gay Streets were toppled by wreckers on Friday morning as scores of local people watched.
For several days previously workers had been cutting deep rings in the pillars above the footing and it was expected that the break would occur at this point.
However, weight of the pillars and the strength of the steel lining in each column caused the pillars to pull out the footings. The new Bank of America branch office can be seen in the background.
When the site occupied by the old building is cleared of debris it will be used as a parking area for bank customers. (Schullo photo).
