April 17, 1980

LITTLE OLD MAN HONORED — Susanville’s Pat Murphy, center, surrounded by the Little Leaguers to whom he has dedicated the past 14 years, was honored yesterday when the city’s Little League park was renamed Pat Murphy Fields.

Presenting the city resolution ordering the change were Mayor Harold Grayson, left and former Mayor Jimmy C. Young, right.

Now 84, Murphy, fondly called the Little Old Man, is treasurer of the league which he has served as equipment manager and in various other capacities.

Under his guidance, participation by city youngsters in the American pastime has increased and the baseball park has flourished into a two field complex complete with lighting, grass infields and concession, scoring and equipment facilities.

“I’ve put in a lot of time and a lot of work over the past 14 years and I’ve loved every minute of it,” Murphy told the crowd. (Advocate photo by Jeff Fontana)
