An early view of Fruit Growers Supply Company’s Susanville mill

Fruit Growers Mill to Start Monday
April 20, 1927

THREE WEEKS’ LOG SUPPLY IN MILL POND
Decision was made this week by E. B. Birmingham, resident manager of the Fruit Growers Supply Co., to open the mill on Monday next.

While conditions in the woods are such that operations there can not commence for some time even with the weather as it is there is 4,000,000 feet of logs in the pond of the company at the present time which is sufficient to keep the mill running at one shift for a period of three weeks.

It is the hope of officials that they will be able to get into the woods by the first of May, which by the way is the latest that the woods have remained closed for some time. There is an average depth of snow in the woods now of 3 feet.

If the weather remains warm it will take at least 10 days or two weeks for the snow to melt sufficiently to permit of logging operations. Resident manager Birmingham states that he looks for business conditions to be about the same as last year with possibly some improvement.

The planing mill has been operating a small night crew this week.
