Over 250 Exhibits in Lassen County Science Fair
April 21, 1975

THE LASSEN COUNTY SCIENCE FAIR, sponsored by the Lassen Rural Teachers Association and Lassen College, was held at the college gymnasium March 17-21 with over 250 exhibits. Many of the winners with their trophies are pictured above.

Winners of the Lassen County Board of Education prizes were as follows: Trophies and up to $60 to pay expenses for family to attend the Chico Science Fair’s awards banquet which was held yesterday and to view the Chico Science Fair today:

Best of show: Rob Valceschini of Diamond View for his “Nutrition Deficiency in Tomato Plants.”

Best of biological exhibits: Darren Longabaugh of Janesville with his “Electroculture.”

Best of physical science exhibits: Sam Porter of Janesville with his “Star Light, Star Bright.”

Students receiving pocket calculators for best of category, regardless of age group were as follows:

Best behavioral and social science exhibit: Heidi Morris of Janesville 8th grade with “Response Conditioning” of fish.

Best biochemistry: Dawn Ingham of Seventh-day Adventist School 8th grade with “How Kneading Affects Bread Texture.”

Best botany: Jim Blickenstaff of Janesville 7th grade with “Floristing with Flowers.”

Best chemistry: Patti Gerald of Janesville 8th grade with “Does Food Color Affect Different Temperatures of Water.”

Best earth and space science: Jeff Kampt of Diamond View 7th grade with a “Solar Oven.”

Best engineering: John Eagle of Shaffer 6th grade with “How to Make a Simple Telegraph.”

Best mathematics and computers: Glenn Sturges of the Seventh-day Adventist School 6th grade with “Altitude Measurement.”

Best medicine and health: Mandy Rollins of Diamond View 6th grade with “The Human Heart.”

Best microbiology: Kimberly Hoskey, Diamond View 6th grade, with “Culture of Bacteria.”

Best physics: Angie Genasci of McKinley 4th grade, “Cooling Water.”

Best zoology: Gayle Bailey, McKinley 4th grade, “Are Siamese Cats Color Blind?”

Also receiving pocket calculators for best of grade, regardless of category were:

Best 8th grade: Fred Wemple of Janesville for “Which Fertilizer is Best.” (Botany).

Best 7th grade: Jim Uptegrove, Diamond View, for “Light Travels Through the Dark But you Can’t See it.” (Physics).

Best 6th grade: Julie Sweet of Diamond View for “Solar Heating.” (Physics and space science).

Best 5th grade: Lisa Chittock, Washington School, “Insulation.” (Physics).

Best 4th grade: Debra Dow of Janesville with “How Will Your Garden Grow?” (Botany).

Receiving a year’s subscription to “Ranger Rick’s Nature Magazine” are the following:

Best of 3rd grade: Nicole LoBuglio of Janesville with “Coal Garden.” (Chemistry).

Best of 2nd grade: Link Smith of McKinley for “Crystal Radio.” (Physics).

Best of 1st grade: Molly Hopper of Johnstonville for “Which Sprouts First.” (Botany).

Group exhibits were judged separately from the individual ones. Also receiving a year’s subscription to “Ranger Rick’s Nature Magazine” for group or class projects were:

Best 5th to 8th grade exhibit: Mr. Wood’s class at Diamond View for “How Are Organisms Identified?”

Best 4th grade exhibit: Mrs. Bengard’s class at Janesville for a walk in camera “Picture Me.”

Ant farms for the class were awarded to the following group exhibits:

3rd grade: Mrs. Anthony’s class at Janesville for “A Weigh to the Planets.”

2nd grade: (None awarded).

1st grade: Mrs. Steven’s class at Washington for “Birds.”

Special awards donated and awarded by groups and businesses in Susanville were as follows:

George Weiskircher of the Bureau of Land Management awarded a Johnny Horizon Ecology Kit to Patsy McGaughy of the Richmond 6th grade to “The Balance of Nature” (Botany) and a Johnny Horizon wrist watch to Eric Hemphill of the Johnstonville 4th grade for his exhibit “Effect of Fire on Grass.” (Botany).

David Kohut of the U. S. Forest Service awarded Smokey the Bear wrist watches to Julie Kanavel of the Janesville 4th grade for “How Do Plants Get their Water” and Shawn Norton of Janesville 8th grade for “The Sweet Alcoholic” a Botany exhibit.

Jack Burke of the California Division of Forestry awarded a certificate of achievement to Washington Schools kindergarten classes taught by Margarite Crane and Cynday Lawrence for their botany exhibit “Investigating Plants” and a Smokey the Bear pen holder set to Lynda Ingham of the Seventh-day Adventist 6th grade for her botany exhibit “Dendrochronology” (science of growth rings of trees).

Sharon Edwards of the Susanville Art League awarded a certificate for the most artistic exhibit to Lynda Ingham also.

Ray Craig of Toastmasters awarded a plaque to Paul Genasci of Diamond View 7th grade for his botany exhibit “How Does Water Move in a Plant.”

The Lassen Rocks and Mineral Society awarded an agate pyramid to the best individual rock exhibitor, Anthony Mallery of Johnstonville, and to the best class rock exhibit, the Johnstonville kindergarten, a set of thunderegg bookends.

A & W passes, Sierra Theater passes and Roosevelt Pool passes were awarded the following blue and red ribbon winners:

Cindy Goff, Bobby Shepherd, Angie Glasser, Christy Makun, Jack Hess, Cheryl Lovelady, Mark Shafer, Michael Ziph, Audrey Hemphill, Michael Moyers, Cheryl Milan, Becki McElhaney, Danny Johnson and Bill Neely. (Schullo photo).
