Armory Sought for Susanville
April 22, 1953

Susanville would get one of 13 armories to be built in California if the building budget endorsed this week by the California Assembly Ways and Means Committee meets final legislative approval.

According to The Associated Press, the ways and means committee trimmed more than five and one half million from Gov. Earl Warren’s building budget but approved a $1,073,150 armory program in the face of opposition by the legislative auditor.

The National Guard structures, which would be built with a combination of state and federal money, were also planned for Sacramento, Anaheim, Beaumont, Brawley, Montebello, Oakdale, Oakland, Santa Ana, San Bruno, Torrance, Tulare and Yreka. Stockton armory would get an addition.

Of the armory program, Assemblyman Laughlin Waters (R-Los Angeles) said, the question is whether or not the National Guard is doing a good job, and I believe it is.
