Kite Flying Record challenged
April 22, 1978
KITE FLYING RECORD CHALLENGED — Jeff O’Neil, 18, and John Wyers, 19, display the bat kite they plan to use in their assault on the world’s record for the longest kite flight.
The current record, according to the Guiness Book of Records, is held by Walter Scott of Briny Breezes Florida, for a 168-hour flight in 1967.
The two forestry recreation majors at Lassen Community College plan to break the seven day barrier and try for ten days from a location in front of their dormitory on the Lassen campus.
The pair plan to begin their record breaking attempt on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 18th.
“We’ve been practicing for about a week and found that a smaller lighter kite seems to work better. Getting it up is always the problem” Wyers said. “But once it’s up, there’s usually no trouble.” (Advocate photo)
