Lassen High Songleaders Receive Award of Excellence

THE 1976 SONGLEADRERS of LASSEN HIGH SCHOOL, pictured above, received the Award of Excellence after attending a week of training at the University of Southern California from Aug. 9 through Aug. 12. The Lassen girls competed against 30 other High School songleaders squads to walk away with every top honor there was to win at the National Cheerleader Association Camp.
Among the many awards they received were 18 blue ribbons for individual performances in routines taught at the camp; 8 red (second place) ribbons; a superior “Super Star Squad” award for showing integrity and enthusiasm throughout the strenuous week of training; the “Spirit Stick” which is given to the squad showing the most spirit; stamina and general good behavior and courtesy throughout the week; a Superior Blue Ribbon Award for the Dance Routine the girls performed which they brought from home and made up themselves; and the Award of Excellence, a beautiful wood and bronze plaque, which is awarded to the superior squad of the entire camp.
It should be noted that most of the schools attending the camp were from the L.A., Southern California area and in general consisted of much larger squads, some with as many as 20 girls.
The five songleaders worked throughout the summer, raising money that enabled them to provide their transportation to and from the camp, the cost of the camp itself, and meals and lodging, with no tonancial assistance from the School District.
The girls were accompanied to the camp by Teri Watson, acting advisor and Becky Polan. All of the girls would like to express a special thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy C. Young for the use of their pick-up and camper as transportation and for the wonderful prime rib dinner at Bakersfield.
