Loggers Show Popular Event at Lassen Fair

Once a year Susanville has the chance to see the skills of the woodsman at their exciting best amid the din of the chain saw and muscle and bite of the bucking saw and hand ax. It all comes in the form of the ever popular Northwest Loggers Show set this year for Saturday night, Aug. 21, during the five-day run of the Lassen County Fair and Livestock Show.
The best of Lassen County will meet woodsmen from communities throughout northern California and Oregon. At stake will be prize money, rosette ribbons and the coveted championship trophy that goes to the all around top woodsman.
Competitors will aim for the bullseye in the Paul Bunyan ax throw, and race the clock in hand chopping, single hand bucking, Jack and Jill hand bucking, choker setting and power saw events. Atop a huge log, three feet above ground, contestants with boxing gloves will battle it out for Bull of the Woods honors.
On top of this will be a local one-man power saw competition, limited to woodsmen from Lassen, Modoc, Plumas-Sierra and that part of Shasta County east of the Burney Mountains.
Not to be denied will be the amateur power saw wood cutters. This event is open to any would-be winter wood cutter who can man a power saw. The fair will furnish the chain saws and soft log for this one, all the contestant needs is his strong arm. A handsome trophy awaits the winner and “the more the merrier in this event”, says Leo Fain, local falling contractor who is organizing the events of this year’s loggers show.
