Drive for Finances for Rodeo
August 26, 1939

Chairman F. L. Holmes of the chamber of commerce finance committee announced today that the drive for funds for the rodeo and racing program in connection with the Livestock Show will be conducted this week, probably beginning tomorrow.

Three teams of three members each have been appointed to make the canvass and the business section apportioned so that there will be no duplication of visits.

Chairman Holmes asserts that this will be the only request from merchants for the enterprise, that there will be no second call from the enterprise for advertising on the racing program or anything else, and that the street decoration have already been provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The three canvassing teams consist of C. H. Bridges, Art Ducasse and Fred Deal, L/ R. Cady, C. C. Doyle and W. O. Long; Reed Barron, R. J. Williams and O. C. Watts.

One Idea for Arousing Interest in Big Event

Ruth Lanigar, deputy county assessor, who always has enthusiasm in worthwhile civic matters, is not satisfied with what she considers lack of “spirit” in connection with the Lassen County Livestock Show and Rodeo.

She has an idea, and one that might really rouse the people of Susanville to an appreciation of what the big event means to everyone. She also knows something of feminine psychology.

Ruth has an idea that if a purse is created by participants in a feminine parade on Main Street, each participant to contribute 25 cents and the purse will be awarded just before the big event.

The idea seems to be based on the assumption that women like to parade, care nothing about 25 cents, and get a real thrill out of a drawing.

The whole idea is to arouse people to the fact that there will be a real event of great public interest August 24-27.

Jim Bronson, chairman of the publicity committee for the Livestock Show and Rodeo, accompanied by Frank Bangham, Earl Coffin, John Spalding and the “Four Musical Rascals” left for Alturas to acquaint the northern metropolis with the details of the big event.
The musicians consist of Harry Sella, accordion; Kenneth Hansen, piano; Del Mortimer, drums; and Sammy Fatrano, clarinet all half pint size, but thoroughly accomplished artists.
