Ex Mayor Jim Chapman
December 12, 1976
EX-MAYOR JIM CHAPMAN, left, hands the mayor’s gavel over to the newly elected mayor, Councilman Charles Richardson, who was elected by the City Council at their meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 6th, at 7:30p.m. in the council chambers.
This is Richardson’s second term as mayor of Susanville, an office he held for one year from April 1965 to April 1966. Richardson, who retired as a ranger from the California Division of Forestry in 1975, was a City Councilman from 1964 to 1972. In March of 1976 he was again elected to the Council until his new position as mayor.
Chapman was recently elected to the County Board of Supervisors and resigned as mayor at the Council’s meeting.
When asked why he has become mayor for a second time, Richardson commented “because the council has chosen me to do it.”
He also feels that he definitely has his work cut out for him. “These next three months,” says Richardson, “the work load will be the heaviest, because we will only have three Councilmen.” It is more than probable that the Council will have an election in March.
The Council may appoint their members but must do so within 30 days of an opening or must have an election within 74 days. (Advocate photo).
