Tilley Quits Lassen Post
December 17th, 1946

J. Tilley has resigned as city fire engineer, and also as city clerk, effective January 1, but will retain the position of city engineer, it was announced at the meeting of the city council this week.

Tilley first became city clerk and engineer in 1922, and returned to the position twice, after short periods in other work. He will become full time engineer for the Lassen-Modoc joint highway 14, in which he has been active for several years.

Gabe Laxalt, employed by the State Farm Insurance Co., is the new fire engineer, starting Monday of this week, and as city clerk January 1, Laxalt has lived in Susanville most of his life. A graduate of the Lassen Union high school, he served four and a half years in the army, as a member of an air force inspection team in Italy.

He encircled the world from New Zealand, Australia, India, Suez and Palestine, North Africa to Italy while in the service.

Tilley expects to have preliminary work on joint highway 14 completed for awarding a contract for 17 miles next spring, and 16 miles on the Adin end for construction Next Summer.
