LMUD Presents: This Day in Susanville History – December 23, 1979

Good Attendance at Messiah
December 23, 1979

An overflow crowd of about 250 persons attended this year’s annual performance of the traditional Christmas oratorio, Messiah, Saturday night at the United Methodist Church in Susanville.

The 50-member Susanville Community Chorus performed under the direction of Ray Craig, Lassen High School band director. Dennis Roberts, Diamond View School band director was the organist.

Soloists included, standing in front from left, the Rev. Albert Tilstra, tenor; Mrs. Martha Sweet, soprano; Mrs. Mari McFarland, alto; Joseph Harvey, bass. Marguerite Horner, soprano, was absent due to illness.

Standing behind and to the left of the soloists are Craig and Roberts.

The work was composed by George Frederic Handel in the 18th century. Saturday’s performance was recorded and will be broadcast by KSUE-FM Friday evening.
