Lassen Seeking Flood Control Projects
December 26, 1938
Three major flood control projects in Lassen County have been planned by the county board of supervisors with the total proposed cost reaching $60,000.
Requests have been made to Governor Merriam, for appropriations from the state emergency fund.
All projects are a result of the disastrous December floods of last winter, in which extensive damage was done in three sections of the county which are covered by the plans.
Projects are Construction of a levee on the north bank of the Susan River in the town of Susanville opposite the Lassen Union high school athletic field which was damaged by floods last winter.
The proposed levee is seven hundred feet long with the inner side faced with concrete and stone. Cost $1500.
Clearing and dredging the channel of the Susan River between the towns of Standish and Litchfield, a distance of sixteen miles, at a cost of $35,00. Landowners in the district have agreed to supply a certain amount of labor and motorized equipment should the plan be approved.
The third project is clearing the channel of the Pit River between Lookout and Bieber, a distance of six miles at a cost of $24,000.
Copies of the request have been sent to the governor and to state engineer, Edward Hyatt.
