Susanville Flier Lands on St. Louis Street Crossing
December 29, 1943
Chief test pilot John E. A. Allen of Susanville, California, ran out of gas over St. Louis yesterday and landed neatly in the middle of the intersection of Jamieson and Loughborough Avenues, near the edge of town. There were no injuries.
Allen left Bloomington, Ill., about 120 miles away, earlier in the day accompanied by two other planes en route to Susanville. He said he did not know what became of his two flying escorts.
Allen, employed by the Defense Plant Corporation in Washington, was flying a navy 3n3n plane when he was forced down.
The plane’s only damage was a ruffled landing wheel.
