Richmond School to Begin Safety Patrol
February 11, 1977
TRAFFIC ON RICHMOND ROAD and students going to and from Richmond School will be supervised beginning today, by 7th and 8th grade patrolmen. Mrs. Lenore Brown, principal of the school, says the program for traffic control was initiated by parents concerned about the safety of children crossing Richmond Road.
Brown said in the past the school had fewer students who were easier to keep track of, but now 99 students attend the school and she said there is a need for the Safety Patrol.
Russ Haley, a CHP officer, spoke Monday to the 10 students who will be patrolmen and outlined procedures for traffic control and safely crossing students. Haley said the speed limit is 55 mph normally on the road but drops to 25 mph in the school zone during recesses and when children are coming or going to the school.
Haley said the hillcrest to the east of the school reduces driver visibility of the crosswalk near the school. The officer said some parents have complained to the CHP office in the past about their children having to run off the road trying to avoid fast moving traffic.
Brown said the patrol will be at the crosswalk daily from 8:30 to 9 a.m., from 1:50 to 2:15 p.m., and from 2:50 to 3:15 p.m.
