Susanville Gets ‘Gay White Way’
January 2, 1955
Susanville has a “gay white way” these nights, thanks to the first fluorescent street lightning in California.
The new fluorescent luminaries are used in conjunction with Mercury-vapor lighting on the main street, and replace old street lights manufactured in 1911 and set up here in 1925.
Mayor Carl Lewis turned on the new lights, after which California-Pacific Utilities Co. and General Electric, which manufactures the new type lights, were host to nearly 100 leading citizens at a banquet.
