Snowmobile Exhibition and Races Held on Sunday
January 20, 1972
Last Sunday afternoon Susanville citizens, members of the Lassen Snowmobile Club, Center officials, employees and inmates all gathered at the California Conservation Center recreation yard to participate in a snowmobile exhibition and races.
Shortly after the 22 snowmobiles entered the recreation yard, approximately 850 inmates joined the fun and rode on the vehicles during the sixty-minute warm up.
The races began with 22 drives in a tandem relay with inmates riding behind carrying basketballs.
Later in the day, as added entertainment, the more skilled veteran drivers raced in the two “Dare-Devil” heats. Both races were won by Center employees.
Marvin Music was the winner of the first race with Jim Hardy crossing the finish line first on the second one. For the grand finale, every snowmobile entered the track, large inner tubes were tied to the rear of the vehicles and inmates by the hundreds were towed over the snow.
The sounds of laughter, cheers and shouts from the participants Sunday afternoon indicated that this “prison first’ recreational event generated a healthy team spirit and strengthened rapport among community members, employees and inmates.
