Los Angeles Times Carries Story on Center
January 21, 1973

The Los Angeles Times, with a Sunday circulation of 1,200,000 carried this photo taken at Tony’s Barber Shop on N. Lassen Street. This photo, along with one of Susanville’s KSUE disc jockeys Barry Harbison singing “The Conservation Center is Closing Blues,” was part of an extensive article on the proposed closure of the Conservation Center carried in the Sunday, January 14th, issue of the Times.

The story appeared on page one of the second news section.

Another extensive article on the same page dealt with the controversy surrounding the probation subsidy program, which has come under attack by members of the Save Our Center committee. The above photo was taken by the Times photographer Cal Montney.

The cutline with the photo read as follows: “Barber Shop Parley – Susanville barber Tony Farano, left, cuts hair of Mayor Ivor Lanigar, whose paper is being shared by Bill Lawrence of Save Our Center Committee. At right, barber Fred Borghi reads over the shoulder of Ralph Couso, chairman of County Board of Supervisors. Conversation centers on prison.”
