Annual Shoot-Off
January 28, 1975

A perfectly cloudless, still day came suddenly alive with the sharp report of firearms as three of Lassen College’s firearm classes held their annual shoot-off for an elimination competition for marksmanship trophies contest.

Instructor Jim Hale opened each event, commanding, “Lock and load. Ready on the right. Ready on the left. Ready on the firing line. Commence firing.” And they did.

Held on the Conservation Center’s firing range, competitors vied for titles held by last year’s champs, Bruce Shaderhalm, aggregate rifle winner, and Terry A. Patton, aggregate pistol champion. Although the result of the competition will not be available for some time, nevertheless this delay did not dampen the shooter’s spirits.

First off was a national match pistol course, with the possible accumulation of 300 points, followed by the Mexican Defense and Police Combat (silhouette) course.

Rifles were next, with both a 50-meter modified International Rifle Course and a Criminal Justice Subject-Hostage course. The event was topped with an aggregate International Air Rifle Championship of a possible 400 points.
