Susanville Has First Case of Gangsterism
January 28, 1934
What has been termed Susanville’s first outbreak of gangsterism had its aftermath today when Louis A. Cazzalio, 22 started serving a sentence of six months in the county jail, in addition to paying a cash fine of $100, on conviction of having interfered with Night Policeman Pearl Long on November 1.
The severe sentence was imposed by Superior Judge H. D. Burroughs following conviction of Cazzalio by a jury. The recommendation of the jury that Cazzalio be placed under probation and given his liberty was denied.
Cazzalio interfered with Long when the officer sought to arrest several members of a gang of youths who were creating a disturbance on the streets.
A battle between the youth and the officer ensued in which Long was severely beaten. He was confined to a hospital for two weeks with fractured jaw and other injuries.
