LMUD Presents: This Day in Susanville History – January 6, 1924

Town Hall Formally Opened
January 6, 1924

Visitors are entertained and shown through new city building. Susanville’s new town hall was officially opened to the public last Sunday afternoon and a good sized attendance enjoyed the entertainment that was given and appreciated the warm welcome that was extended by the reception committee.

Approximate cost is $35,000. The new town hall which is located on Lassen Street is a concrete reinforced building and cost approximately $35,000 to erect. Its wooden joists are the only things which keep it out of class A buildings. Woodward & Greebe were the lowest bidders for the contract and will without expense to the town make good all defects which might occur in material or workmanship for one year.

The clerk’s room is a small office at the entrance to the building and in this is a good sized built safe. The council room is on the same floor and is a space 33 feet by 19 feet 6 inches, equipped with large desk, table and revolving chairs on a platform for juries.
On the same floor is also the engine room where the hook and ladder machine is kept. This room is 14×50 feet.

Well equipped quarters. The quarters upstairs are comfortable and well equipped. They consist of the engineer’s suite composed of bedroom, living room, dining room, kitchen, bath and laundry. The living room has a wall bed in it.

In the volunteer firemen’s quarters there are three bedrooms which can accommodate six firemen. The usual brass pole starts up here and as usual ends at the bottom.

In the basement are the fire alarm apparatus and the heating system. The latter is of the hot water type and is such that it can heat the building to a temperature of 70 degrees with the thermometer at 10 degrees below zero outside. The oil for the heating plant is in a concrete tank of more than 3000 gallons capacity and is outside the building underground.
The fire apparatus is operated by steam and pressure and is connected up with the different fire alarm boxes throughout the town.

A fifteen-second getaway. The volunteer firemen showed the visitors what they could do in a quick getaway. A false alarm was turned in and the boys were off and on their way in fifteen seconds. Fast work.
