Design Can Crusher
July 22, 1974
Members of the Lassen County Senior Babe Ruth team gathered recently to crush 362 cases of empty aluminum cans. The team hopes to be able to raise funds to pay off a $1,300 debt left from last year.
The cans were saved for the team by Marion’s, 75 s. Weatherlow, but because of practice and league games the task of crushing them seemed monumental.
When Ivan Givens, Tom Givens and Rudy McGowan of Susanville Auto Wreckers heard of the problem they went to work and designed and built the machine pictured above which can crush about three cases a minute.
Pictured from left are Harry Bussey, Mike Foley, Jerry Bonham, Richard Larrea and Manager Kent Porter feeding the machine. In the background is Albert Foley and Duane Smith.
Other team members who worked on the project, but not present, are David Arnold, Mike Render, Larry Markham and Curt Porter. (Lovell photo).
