Susanville Little All-Stars Win Opening Tourney Game

THE SUSANVILLE Little League All-Stars, behind the no-hit pitching of David Thomas, shut out visiting Burney Basin 10-0 to win their opening round game in District 48 Tournament action. The contest was played Saturday, July 2, at the Susanville Major Field.
In hurling his no-hitter, Thomas allowed only four base runners. Two Burney Basin players walked, one was hit by a pitch and the fourth reached base via an error. Only one Burney player made it to third base against the sharp hurling Thomas who fanned 11 batters. Thomas helped his own cause with a fourth-inning homer.
Rob Valceschini also hit a round-tripper in the same inning in which Susanville scored eight of their ten runs. The winners had solo tallies in the first and second innings. Among Susanville’s other seven hits were a triple by Steve Humphrey, a single and double by Don Maudlin and Brian Kingston and singles by Mike Johnson and Chipper Chittock.
Other first round games in the single-elimination tourney saw Greenville edge visiting Westwood 8-6, Herlong defeat host Chester 15-10, Quincy smash visiting Portola-Sierra 9-1 and host Intermountain (Adin) blast Modoc 15-1.
The entire District 48 tourney will move to Susanville tonight with one game scheduled for 7:30 p.m. each evening through Saturday when the championship contest will be held. Tonight Greenville will play Herlong. The winner of that contest will play Quincy tomorrow evening. On Friday evening Susanville will take on Intermountain. On Saturday evening at 7:30 the Thursday and Friday winners will meet for the district championship.
Saturday’s championship contest will be preceded at 5 p.m. by a contest between Westwood and Alturas for the District 48 Girls’ Softball championship. All games will be played on the Susanville Major Field.
