Scenes Tuesday Night at Voting Center
June 3, 1974

TABULATING THE VOTES – Lassen County voters for the first time in Tuesday’s primary election used the new Accu-Vote System to cast their ballots by punching cards at the polling places which were then placed in security envelopes and following the close of the polls taken for tabulation to a controlled ballot center which County Clerk Jacquelyn Fountain established in the Supervisor’s Room.

In the picture at left, the operator is shown running the punched cards through the machine which counts up to 400 cards per minute.

Because of the large number of candidates for federal, state and county offices as well as the nine state propositions, the tabulations proceeded slower than had been expected. The official canvass of votes was expected to be completed yesterday, County Clerk Fountain stated yesterday morning.

A welcome relief for workers and others was provided just after midnight when Attorney James E. Pardee appeared with a large box of sandwiches which he distributed.

In picture at right, Pardee is shown just after handing a sandwich to Mark Totten, County Purchasing Agent and Planning Director. (Advocate photos).
