March 2, 1924
Jury Returns Verdict Not Guilty After Short Deliberation
Frank Wrede of Standish who was arrested some time ago by Sheriff Carter and charged with the unlawful possession of intoxicating liquor faced a jury in the local justice court yesterday.
Justice R. G. Green presided owing to the indisposition of Justice Wood.
Sheriff Carter was the only witness placed on the stand by the prosecution while the defense had several witnesses from Standish who testified as to the good name and character of Mr. Wrede, most of them having known him for the past twenty or thirty years.
These witnesses were Will Tucker, John Wemple, Lawrence Wemple, Orlando Adams, J.H. Elledge and Joe Keath.
The liquor that was seized by the sheriff was what is commonly called wine of pepsin and was diagnosed by Wm. Bryant as containing a little over 17 percent alcohol. Mr. Wrede testified that he used it as a medicine and that on a few occasions he had sold some to friends.
The jury was out but a short time and returned a verdict of not guilty.
