Projects Underway for Lassen Science Fair
March 23, 1977
BUSY PREPARING FOR FAIR—Colored paper, cardboard, glue + growing plants, seashells, bottles of water and metric scales. It’s all part of the preparation which is underway by students in Lassen County schools as they get ready for the Annual Science and Engineering Fair being held March 25 through April 1.
The fair, which is open to students in kindergarten through high school seniors, provides a creative outlet for their energy and a demonstration of their knowledge. Winners of the competition receive ribbons in various judging categories as well as special awards offered by local businesses and organizations.
There are two divisions: Junior, for kindergarten through 8th grades; and Senior, for 9th through 12th grades. Deadline for entries is Friday, March 18. Students interested in doing a project may obtain an entry blank from their teacher or from the County Schools Office.
No admission is charged for the fair which is open to the public March 27 through March 31. An awards banquet will be held March 28 at the Lassen High School Student Center. Winning exhibits will compete in the Chico Science and Engineering Fair, April 11-15.
Students throughout the county were getting ready for this past week. In Mrs. Marion Bailey’s class at McKinley School, Joe Sweet is feeding nutrients to plants which he is growing hydroponically. Another plant experiment is David Dickerson’s, where he is growing plants in a controlled environment. At the Janesville Elementary School, in Mrs. Kay Baker’s class, Michael Moyers is growing plants under different colored lights to see how these affect growth, and Missy Wilks is observing how plants grow normally.
Other projects underway are by Denise Dunn, who is demonstrating “how your water system works”, and Joe Hemphill who is working on “how does heat travel.” Three youngsters in Mrs. Jean Bengtson’s kindergarten class are checking out the metric system in “growing by leaps and metrics”, and another three are demonstrating a variety of seashells.
These are only a few of the demonstrations and experiments which will be viewed at the Science Fair. Many more will be on view at Jensen Hall at the Lassen County Fair Grounds when the fair begins.
Instructors, or persons interested in making a special donation to the fair, may contact Judy Power, fair coordinator, at the County Schools Office, 257-2196, for more information.
