Susanville Police Now Using Radar Units
March 30, 1979
MOTORISTS BEWARE—Susanville police officers have been putting their new $1,400 radar unit to good use in the past few days since its arrival. Pictured, patrolman Wayne Sullivan, one of several Susanville officers qualified to use the machine, checks out the dash unit prior to leaving for a street patrol.
Local police now have two such units and Sgt. Jack Burk says they will be put to use primarily on high traffic streets with speed problems. He notes the units are effective in slowing traffic down and increasing safety.
“Our purpose is to keep traffic safe – not to come out here and issue citations,” he says.
Radar detectors? Sure, they work against this type of device but they don’t particularly bother Burk. “If a guy’s detector tells him we are using radar ahead he’ll slow down and that’s what we’re after,” he relates. (Advocate photo).
