Susanville Raises Sufficient Money to Buy Fort Roop
May 10, 1937

The Roop fort memorial fund, of which Gene Shoupe is chairman, has reached the $575 goal.

Late yesterday $586.86 had been donated.

Roop’s fort was owned by the founder of the county, Governor Isaac Roop. His daughter, Susan Roop, was the namesake of Susanville.

Those contributing were Thomas Tucker Legion post, $100; Native daughters, $135.72; Susanville elementary schools, $33, and contributions ranging from $1 to $10 by B. F. Lyle, V. D. Lott, F. C. O’Kelly, Dr. C. I. Burnett, R. M. King, James Butting, Virginia Martin, Standard Stations Inc., Dr. G. S. Martin, Business Men’s Men’s Credit Association, American Legion auxiliary, A. Friend, E. F. Koken, Mrs. Fred Davis, Sr., and Mrs. Nettie Borrette.

Later donations have been made by the 20-30 club, $101.04; Alex Sifeford, $25; Elks club, $10; Rotary club $10; Susanville Veterans of Foreign Wars, $25, and others.
