Here’s a Lot of Sad News for Susanville Kids
May 22, 1931

Here’s some sad news for Susanville’s kids.

The town “fathers,” in session at the regular May board meeting, held at the city hall Monday night, favored the passing of an ordinance at the June meeting, which would delay the sale of pyrotechnics or, in other words, fireworks, for a longer period than in the past years.

It seems that the early firing of the explosives has disturbed the peace of the town’s residents to the point where the ordinance action had to be resorted to by the members of the council.

Although not yet drawn or in effect, it is thought that this ordinance would delay the opening of the firing for a week or more and would close the sale of the noisemakers on the day following thew July Fourth.

Heretofore the kids have started their celebrating almost a month before the actual occasion. It is believed that Susanville merchants handling the explosives will co-operate with the city to this extent due to the fact that they have not yet placed their orders with various wholesale dealers.

It also became known at the meeting that various property owners who reside on Nevada street between Union and Gay streets were favored curbing and gutter improvement along that thoroughfare.

After paying of claims, ordering two municipally owned flagpoles painted and appropriating $10 toward a fund to defray the cost of painting a sign “Susanville Airport” on the roof of a barn owned by Claude Sharp at the Johnstonville airport site, the meeting adjourned.
