Still Explodes Gives Bootlegger Away
October 13, 1921
The usual serenity of our town was suddenly disturbed on Thursday morning by the ringing of the fire bells. Our fire department, immediately responding, knew not which way to go—the fire could not be located.
Small wonder it was so hard to discover—it was a “still” fire. A man by the name of Parker who is employed in the local pool hall has been operating a still in his home in Halltown.
Nearby residents were startled by an explosion of considerable violence. Some thought it another earthquake, others were not so sure as earthquakes have not been known heretofore to spread an alcoholic aroma.
They endeavored to gain admission but fearing discovery Parker had thoroughly barricaded himself with his fire and was endeavoring to master it alone.
Several of the windows having been blown open, however, by the explosion two of our leading citizens, Mr. N. V. Wemple and Webb Pinneo were able to gain an entrance via the burglar route. They were the heroes of the occasion, Mr. Pinneo securing a hose and the fire, which was rapidly making its way throughout the house, was quickly extinguished.
Upon discovery Parker was greatly excited, pleading that no more be admitted to discover the cause of his undoing, but without avail, as our town marshal, Tom Massey, was on the job and our erstwhile “hootch” distiller was soon languishing in jail. He was later released on $250 bail.
Mr. Wemple, who resides next door has remained in complete ignorance all the days of the illicit operations being carried on and is being made the victim of considerable joshing as a result.
On appearing before acting Justice of the Peace R. G. Green this morning Parker pleaded guilty. The prisoner appeared in court with many bandages as a result of injuries received, and in view of his physical punishment he was sentenced to pay a fine of fifty dollars or sixty days in jail. Parker was remanded to the custody of the sheriff until such time as he could make payment of his fine. The still, mash, and other paraphernalia was confiscated.
