Buy a Block Build a Dugout Campaign Started

THE “BUY A BLOCK—BUILD A DUGOUT” campaign is under way in Lassen County to help provide funds needed to construct two new dugouts at Susanville Memorial Park’s baseball field.
Everyone in the community will be asked to contribute to the Buy a Block Campaign under the direction of the Susanville Babe Ruth League. These new dugouts will not only serve Susanville Babe Ruth but will also be available to Lassen High teams, Lassen College teams, Senior Babe Ruth-American Legion teams and other members of the community who are using the field.
These dugouts provide protection from line drives for the ball players sitting on the bench, which is the main reason for building them. The dugouts also help a manager keep more control over his players.
This is only the beginning of a project to restore Memorial Park’s baseball field to its original condition when semi-pro baseball was thriving in Susanville.
The pumice block dugouts will be 32 feet long by at least five feet wide and will seat approximately 25 people. They will have heavy wire mesh fencing in front and are supported by steel pipes. The dugouts will be eight feet high in front and six feet in the back.
Material for the dugout is being supplied by Bing Bengston of Lassen Ready Mix. The cement, block and steel will cost approximately $400 for each dugout. The total project including roofing will cost approximately $1,000.
“Everyone in the community is urged to do their part to insure a nicer park and safer conditions for our young people,” stated Susanville Babe Ruth Vice-President Lino Callegari, who along with Deputy Dist. Atty. Don Macintyre, are directing the drive.
Young people are also asked to contribute to the drive as it mainly benefits them. “Any amount would be appreciated,” said Callegari.
