Patrolmen Hired to Halt Tree Thefts
October 24, 1949

In cooperation with private timber owners, two patrolmen are being hired by the Lassen National Forest to prevent Christmas tree thefts.

One patrolman, employed by the forest service and Shasta Forests Company, will work the Susanville – Westwood area. Another financed in cooperation with Shasta Forests Company, Fruit Growers Supply Company, Scott Lumber Company, and the Forest Service, will patrol the Hat Creek area.

William Bacon, timber management chief of the Lassen Forest pointed out that the patrolmen are to prevent wholesale theft of trees. He said the demand for local trees will be higher than usual, because frost nipped and browned much Douglas Fir in the Northwest.

There has been only one commercial sale of trees on the Lassen Forest to date, 2,000 trees near Mineral.
