“Sympathy” Walkout Ordered After Dispute

All grocery stores and meat markets in Susanville were closed today as store employees joined in a “sympathy” strike in the current wage dispute between the retail clerks and Purity and Safeway stores.

Other firms in Susanville closed today at 1 p.m., as employes joined in a sympathy strike. The stores are members of the Susanville Employers Council.

The Purity store here was closed by a walkout Thursday, and Safeway closed today when its help struck. A spokesman for the employers said the stores would remain closed indefinitely, or until a settlement is reached.

It was indicated that the “sympathy” strikes might spread to other businesses.

J.C. Penney & Company’s store was closed three weeks ago because of a strike in a dispute over wages. The store is still closed.

A federal conciliator was here recently, but no agreement was reached.
